History behind the image. In 1872, a band of the Modoc Tribe battled General Custer in an effort to remain out of th Klamath Reservation. The first battle occurred near the Lost River along the Oregon California border. The Modocs lost this battle and retreated to the shore of Tule Lake where they were victorious in the next battles. Today the area is called Captain Jack's Stronghold. If General Custer had not suffered a shocking defeat by the Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne warriors at Little Big Horn, the Modoc War in Oregon would be regarded as the most significant Indian war in America's western history. This sculpture depicts the spirit who protects the land of the Lost River.
